Workampers Sing For Their Supper - And Site To Sleep

Ron’s Story:
Ron, a consummate entertainer with a talent for country and gospel songs, knew he had a voice at a young age. “But I was so shy I would get someone else to read my book reports in school,” he says today.

Abstract:

Opportunities for Workampers are limited only by one’s imagination and initiative. Ron Shepard and Jerry and Sharon Mays, all relatively new to RVing, are proof. Ron, a single act, and Sharon and Jerry, a singing duo, have stepped into the RV world to pursue their dreams of entertaining and inspiring others with their music.

Teaching RVers To Safely Drive Their Rigs is a Business

Gary Lewis followed a slightly different path for his start-up business, RV Basic Training. Yet, he maintains the same end goal as Dick Reed: To help others safely and comfortably navigate a large rig on the highway. He and his wife, Barbara, sold a business, purchased a Class A motorhome, and determined to spend retirement as nomads. However, after his first trip, Gary discovered that driving an RV is different from driving other vehicles. He enrolled in a bus driving school and obtained his CDL license and air brake certification.

Abstract:

Businesses on the road require a dream, particular skills, and the identification of a niche for a service or product. Imagination, creativity, and a heavy dose of persistence also help. Those characteristics fueled truck driving instructor Dick Reed when he started RV Driving School back in 1991. A seasoned RVer himself, he saw a need to teach other RVers how to safely drive their rigs. Dick opened his school and served thousands of satisfied customers from over 48 states before retiring and selling his business in 2007 to one of his trainers, Dennis Hill.

Volunteers Find A Spot Of Magic In The Sonoran Desert

“Painting is my favorite thing to do,” Carol continues, dabbing her brush at saguaro cacti on the canvas mounted on her easel. “When I paint one of the mountains here in the monument, I know that mountain. I’ve been staring at it for a long time.”

Abstract:

“Welcome to my studio,” Volunteer Carol Miller says on the patio behind the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument Visitor Center in the southern Arizona Sonoran Desert.

A Rootin', Tootin' Workamping Job

On Ralph Feller’s Awesome Applicant, his history of hosting Karaoke at various service and night clubs, senior centers, and specialty schools around the Phoenix area caught manager Steve Browning’s eye. In the Old Barn Theater on the Parry Lodge property, Browning hoped to recruit a Workamper to show films that were produced in the area. During the 2006 season, Ralph fit the job role, introducing the movies and telling some history of Parry Lodge. Ralph also entertained guests with stories and trivia about the cast and crew who stayed at the Lodge.

Abstract:

For Workampers seeking a bit of the Old West mixed in with Hollywood’s Golden Age, Parry Lodge at Kanab, Utah, is the next best thing to living and working on a movie production lot. Founded in 1931 by the three Parry brothers, the Lodge has hosted stars while they filmed in scenic locales in and around Kanab. Today, names such as John Wayne, Olivia De Havilland, Gregory Peck, Maureen O'Hara, Tyrone Power, Linda Darnell, Lana Turner, Clint Eastwood and Barbara Stanwyck are still on selected doors of the 89 rooms in the Lodge, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A few of the movies and television series filmed in the area include Wagon Train, The Greatest Story Ever Told, Mackenna’s Gold, The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing, Maverick, Gunsmoke, The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again, and The Outlaw Josey Wales.

Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge Calls To Workampers

Santa Ana listed its openings in early July, although the starting date was December 1. “We sent a short e-mail saying we were interested and would like to send our resumes,” Linda says. “We were recruited by Martin Hagne, Director of the Valley Nature Center, a nonprofit environmental education facility in Weslaco, Texas.

Abstract:

The Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge called Linda Lanoue’s name from the Workamper News Hotline. She and her husband Fred had spent a couple of winters in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, and had visited the refuge many times. “But we weren't looking for jobs in the winter of 2007,” Linda says. “I hadn't even been reading the Hotline, but that particular day, the ad for volunteers at Santa Ana got my attention. We thought the volunteer roles would give us a chance to experience a different type of Workamping than we had done before. We already knew that the positions would be in an interesting place that we already liked.”

Quick Action

Talk about quick action. We had applications coming in Thursday evening and hired a couple yesterday.

Thanks!

We Learned So Much

Tom and I are now three weeks into our fulltime RV life and it is great! Tom retired from his job (and his 60+ mile commute each way) in the middle of April.  We updated our resume and started looking for positions on April 11th. Tom accepted a volunteer position in Georgia by the end of the month and we were on our way by Mother’s Day.  It all happened so fast! I still have my same fulltime job that I had back in Virginia. I am a RN and work from home/RV.

Awesome Assistance

Thank you so much for your awesome assistance! I am continually impressed with the quality of the service you provide. We Workampers so appreciate the job search help that Workamper News offers.

As they say in Hawaii,  Mahalo Plenty!

Sincerely,

- Workamper Jennifer
