RV Industry News

Minnesota Goes After RVers Evading Sales Tax

The state said Wednesday it is investigating 270 cases in which Minnesotans may have set up shell companies to evade paying sales tax on luxury recreational vehicles that can cost more than $1 million.

According to a report in the St. Paul Business Journal, the Minnesota Department of Revenue said in a news release it has closed 22 other cases since Oct. 2010, collecting $230,000 in sales taxes, penalties and fines.

The department said in most of these cases, the Minnesota residents set up shell limited liability corporations in Montana, which does not charge sales tax. The Minnesotans buy the RVs through the Montana corporations and register the vehicles in that state, yet the RVs often are kept in Minnesota.

The state said the high-end RVs cost between $150,000 to more than $1 million.

Minnesota has a 6.5% sales tax, which translates into $9,750 for a $150,000 RV and $65,000 for a $1 million RV.

The state said Minnesota residents convicted of evading the motor vehicle sales tax could face felony criminal charges in addition to having to pay back taxes, penalties and interest.

Begg’s Black Book: RV Wholesale Values Rise

PR – November 2011 by RV Business

Click here to watch the latest Specialty Market video from Ricky Beggs and Black Book. He covers RVs, heavy-duty trucks, motorcycles/powersports and collectible cars. Beggs reported that wholesale values of motorized units rose slightly this month at auction, up $86, which is less than 0.2% of the $42,271 average sales price. Towables, including travel trailers, fifth-wheels and camping trailers, reversed their declines and actually rose $14, an even smaller percentage of 0.1% of the $9,884 sale price.

Camping World Plans New Store Openings

[RV Business Press Release]

Camping World announced a series of store openings in new markets over the next 12 months, according to a press release.

“Camping World is poised for growth in every segment of our business with a goal of 100 stores by 2014,” said Marcus Lemonis, Camping World’s chairman and CEO. “A larger store base will allow us to better serve our 4 million customers nationwide and our 1.3 million Good Sam members. As our ecommerce business continues to explode with record traffic, page visits, and sales, we will continue to invest in our brick and mortar business units with the addition of over 200 service bays nationwide in the next 12 months including more paint and collision centers, accessory stores and RV dealerships.”

Retail accessories store expansions are currently planned in Fort Myers, Fla., Detroit, Nashville, Tenn., Las Vegas, Tucson, Ariz., and Knoxville, Tenn., including RV sales offerings in select locations. Additionally, new store openings are on tap in Florida including Orlando, Ocala, Cocoa Beach and South Florida, along with locations in Oklahoma, the New England states, Virginia, Texas and Washington State. Openings are also slated for Raleigh, N.C., and Harrisburg, Pa.

Camping World currently operates 81 Super Centers nationwide.

New Super-Directory Announced

Marcus Lemonis, Chairman and CEO of Good Sam Enterprises, announced the merger of Woodall’s and Trailer Life’s RV Park and Campground Directories, saying:  “The consolidation of the two directories into one ‘Super Directory’ will provide our customers with a single source for their RVing and camping travel planning. The coming together of these two brands enables us to serve as more than a directory, and will represent an ‘everything RV guide’ for the consumer to be inspired to fully explore the RV lifestyle across North America.” The merger will happen in 2013 and not affect the 2012 directories.

This combined directory will utilize the Trailer Life 10/10*/10 rating system, with some enhancements borrowed from the Woodall’s rating system. The ratings as always will be based on personal visits by directory representatives.

Trivia for Around the Campfire!

“Flea Market”  And where does the name “flea market” come from anyway? According to Word and Phrase Origins by Robert Hendrickson, “These bargain markets have nothing to do with fleas. Flea market has been an American expression as far back as Dutch colonial days when there was a very real Vallie (Valley) Market at the valley, or foot, of Maiden Lane in downtown Manhattan. The Vallie Market came to be abbreviated to Vlie Market and this was soon being pronounced Flea Market. Today there is a flea market (marche aux puces) area in Paris.”

Bill Albright, Poet Extrordinaire

You may not be aware that staff member Bill Albright, who is likely the first person that answers the phone or answers your questions at Workamper News, is a great poet that makes our lives sweeter.  There is not a subject he won’t compose a poem about, including our fun mascot, Sewiepig.

Sewiepig Sewiepig
You’re our Choice

You are our Piggy
>From Tail to Snout
American Made
And we are Proud
To have you Sitting

We appreciate Bill’s humor and talent!

Workampers Q&A

I have taken many of the questions of  Workampers or Dreamers from our Workamper News Facebook page to present to you with answers.  I hope this information will be helpful to you!

Q: Is there a way to access the old Hotlines. I can only look at today’s hotline.

A: You can view the last 7 days of Hotline ads when you login at www.workamper.com and go to the Hotline page. This is a benefit of a WorkamperPlus or above membership. There is no archive of Hotline ads beyond the last 7 days. You can create your own archive by making a folder within your personal email inbox and putting your daily Hotline email in there. Then use the search option within your email program to maneuver through your archive if you’re looking for something specific.

Q: We want to find a job for my husband as a Workamper but haven’t seen anything yet.  I am disabled and can’t work.  Any ideas?

A: There are many couples out there Workamping where only one of the couple work. Look for any positions that would hire a single. The majority of the ‘help wanted’ advertising can be found through the Hotline and in Workamper News magazine (which Plus members can get in the mail and/or view online).

Q: Can you tell me about how much on average a person makes a month Workamping? It would be both my husband and I Workamping. Just trying to figure this out to see how much we can spend on health insurance for us and then how much we have for other expenses.

A: Michelle, we recommend visiting the WKN Forums website It is totally free to register and use. This is a topic often discussed there. Also, if/when you decide to join Workamper News, you will have access to ‘help wanted’ listings submitted to us by employers. We use $ symbols at the end of the ad text to denote what type of compensation they offer. You can search through the Hotline ads or online issues of our magazine for $$ or $$$ if you are looking only for jobs that offer some wages/salary or all hours paid wages.

Q: Where can we buy a copy of a past magazine?

A: We sell back issues!  You can buy some of them online from our Workamper Store Tab “Back Issues” or call us at (501) 362-2637.

Q: I am having trouble logging in to the Forums.  Can you help?

A: I’m sorry you are having trouble with the login. Hundreds of folks use the Forums site successfully, but I understand the login can tricky. The login is case sensitive, so users will need to keep that in mind when typing in the login info. Also, if a user is on their home computer, there is a box that can be checked to ‘automatically log me in each visit’ – then you won’t have to login each time you come to the site.

Q: How can I make Workamper News a friend on Facebook?

A: Technically, you can’t make a ‘page’ a ‘friend’. You can “Like” a page and then the new posts from that page will appear in your News Feed. So click on the Like button up near the top to the right of Workamper News, Inc. Thanks for viewing our Facebook page!

Q: I have not received my magazine in two months.  Why?

A:  Sorry to hear that. It could be for a number of reasons – often it is because we do not have an updated mailing address, a membership has expired, or a membership renewal was submitted with a Green (no mail) instead of regular Plus, or the postal person was not able to deliver the magazine but did not return it to us, or if a magazine was delivered to a location where it is then sorted and people pick up their mail, someone else may have gone home with it.  To update your mail address (or email address), go to our website, then click on the Index Tab “Log Out & Settings.”

New to Workamper News?

Newbies Need to Explore!

If you have recently become an active Workamper News member, and you are trying to understand the terminology you see in the magazine and online, then you can easily go to the Workamper Glossary at www.workamper.com-> Other Useful Tools -> Workamper Glossary.

It takes awhile to get to know our huge website, full of information to help you live in your RV and find job opportunities.   Don’t worry; you’ll get the hang of it if you aren’t afraid to explore!!

“Other Useful Tools” has all sorts of helpful information for you, such as Sample Work Agreements, Workaming FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions), Demographics and contact info.  Be sure to check out all the great articles at the Workamper Journal.

Staff writer Arline Chandler travels throughout the country, teaching seminars on Workamping and meeting with actual Workampers.  Her accounts of adventures and experiences appear in the magazine, in her top-rated book, “Road Work II,” and past articles that she has written for Workamper News can be found under “Workamper Journal” by going to the “Other Useful Tools” tab and then scrolling down to “Workamper Journal.”

You can buy Road Work II through our Store, as we know you’ll enjoy her storytelling.  She has such great advice for RVers and Workampers.  Chuck Woodbury , editor of NewRver says: “If an RVer looking for work on the road doesn’t find the advice or job they’re looking for here, well, then they’re probably unemployable. But seriously, this book goes well beyond the usual “how-to” advice (although it has plenty) to actually profile Workampers and the employers who hire them. In addition to entertaining glimpses into the working RVer’s lifestyle and viewpoints from employers, this book offers information on how to do your Workamping homework, how many hours of work should you expect to do in exchange for a campsite, how to get jobs outside campgrounds and how to operate an on-the-road business.”

Take the time to get to know the website which will educate you on the Workamping lifestyle.  Sometimes it might seem even too overwhelming to ask the right questions! By learning all you can from our staff writers and contributors online, you will begin to feel more confident.

Workampers in the News

If you “Like Us” on Facebook, then you probably saw the link to the article written at ABC News. The article talked mostly about Workampers at Amazon fulfillment centers, and called Workampers “modern migrants.”  All in all, it is a good thing to get the word out about Workamping.  It would be nice if the news got out about all the volunteer work that is done by Workampers, and more emphasis was placed on the great parks and campground jobs that enable Workampers to enjoy great seasons in great places.  Wouldn’t it be awesome if more was written on the variety of backgrounds, education and experiences you’ve had and what brought you to the RV lifestyle?  If you would like to share your story, please write to WKN Staff member MaryLou at marylou@workamper.com  She can submit some articles of interest to highlight other aspects of RVing and Baby Boomers enjoying life, staying busy and making a difference.

We would also appreciate your input as to what you like about the In-Between News.  Is it helpful to have a calendar of upcoming events all in one place as a reminder? Do you appreciate the RV Industry News shared here or in the PAGES section to the right of the IBN?  (Look at Right Column now, if you haven’t before).  Articles are added to “Pages”  when time permits and there is newsworthy press releases to share.  If you hear of any news bites or see interesting links about RVing or RVers around the country, let us know.

To build a community, we need input from you. Take the time each week to review what is posted in the In-Between News, and go to the Forums site to communicate with other Workampers and Dreamers. Share your wisdom and experiences with others; or ask your own questions! Please and thank you.
