In the Workamper News Store

You can find in current Number 2 position,  Arline Chandler’s Road Work II: The RVer’s Ultimate Income Resource Guide in the Store.

This book gives faces and personalities to real-life Workampers and the employers who hire them. Through their shared experiences and tips for finding productive and profitable jobs on the road, this guide is a springboard for an RVer’s imagination and ingenuity in seeking income earning opportunities compatible with individual interests. Paperback. 498 pages. $19.95

Here’s what Chuck Woodbury, editor of NewRVer.com has to say: “Oh my goodness. . . is this a piece of work! What an awesome book, just two pages shy of 500 pages. If an RVer looking for work on the road doesn’t find the advice or job they’re looking for here, well, then they’re probably unemployable. But seriously, this book goes well beyond the usual “how-to” advice (although it has plenty) to actually profile Workampers and the employers who hire them. In addition to entertaining glimpses into the working RVer’s lifestyle and viewpoints from employers, this book offers information on how to do your Workamping homework, how many hours of work should you expect to do in exchange for a campsite, how to get jobs outside campgrounds and how to operate an on-the-road business. Author Arline Chandler doesn’t miss a thing. Virtually every type of job is profiled from positions in national parks to those at Disney, golf courses, lodges, on cruise ships, in wildlife programs and countless other places. In addition, Chandler provides extensive information about volunteer positions, where Workampers can truly help enrich other peoples’ lives. This book is worth every penny of its price and more. You will love it.”

Some RV Industry News You Can Use!

New Website for Consumer Generated Reviews and Ratings

Lesiure Interactive LLC and GuestRated LLC, has developed a full-featured consumer-generated review system for campgrounds and RV parks, reports RV Business.  Campers and RVers are now able to search for parks, read individual consumer comments and ratings, and submit their own campground reviews, enhancing the consumer trip planning experience along with access to book a campsite.  Park managers then have an opportunity to respond to reviews and connect with the online consumer.  Guest satisfaction is the goal.  To learn more about these tools, visit  Guest Reviews.

Statistical Surveys, Inc. reports on RV Sales—

Year-over-year retail sales of towable RVs fell 3% in March while showing a 4.4% increase for the first quarter, according to Statistical Surveys Inc. (SSI). [It was suggested by some that the bad weather had an impact on it.]

Most segments showed just slight declines for the month compared with 2010 while sales of folding camping trailers dropped 14%. Quarterly totals indicated a flat market across the board.

By segment sales in March and for the first three months were as follows:

* Travel trailer sales fell 1.7% for the month and rose 5.9% for the first quarter.
* Fifth-wheel sales were down 3.5% in March and up 3% for the quarter.
* Folding camping trailer sales decreased 2.7% for the first three months.
* Park model sales declined 4.8% in March and 5.5% for the quarter.

Summary
• Motorhome retail registrations in the U.S. fell 1% in March. Class A registrations decreased 2%, while Class C registrations were unchanged. The late arrival of spring in most regions was probably a headwind to retail sales in the month.

Gas/Diesel: Class A-Diesel registrations fell 24% while Class A-Gas registrations increased 21%.

RVIA reported May 27, 2011 about APRIL sales, as follows:

Wholesale shipments of 24,600 units to retailers were reported by manufacturers in the April 2011 Recreation Vehicle Industry Association’s (RVIA) monthly survey, the same total for April the year prior.

RVIA reported that on a seasonally adjusted basis, shipments in April were at an annual rate of 242,100 units, 6.3% lower than the previous month. Towable RVs were slightly lower than April last year while motorhomes were slightly higher.

Year to date, shipments of all RVs through April were at 89,700 units, up 6.2% overall. Each product type reported shipment totals above this period last year except folding camping trailers.

California in the RV News

Reported on May 17, 2011 by RV Business PR Newsletter—

California state parks officials recently announced the closure of 70 parks because of the state budget deficit, according to a report in the Sacramento Bee. Gov. Jerry Brown’s January budget plan proposed reducing the state parks budget by $22 million. The Legislature in March approved $11 million in cuts to state parks and $10 million in cuts to off- highway vehicle parks in the next fiscal year, with $22 million in cuts to state parks in future years.

The California State Parks System was directed to identify which parks would close based on attendance rates and historical significance. The department operates more than 270 state park units covering more than 1.4 million acres.

The department at first said service reductions will begin over the summer and closures will begin in September, but later announced that the parks will not be fully closed until July 1, 2012. The cuts have not yet been signed by Brown, so a final list could grow or shrink based on the actions the Legislature takes to close the budget deficit.

Parks officials said they tried to protect the most significant cultural and natural resources, while maintaining the parks that provided the most public access and state revenue. In addition, the department intends to seek partnership agreements with local governments and non-profits in attempt to keep some of the parks open. They said 92% of total park attendance will be retained and 94% of existing revenues even with the closures.

Reported on May 20, 2011 by RV Business

With budget cuts threatening to force the shutdown of 70 California state parks, the state Assembly on Thursday (May 19) unanimously approved legislation making it easier for nonprofit groups to take over operations at some parks.

Huffman, the chairman of the Assembly Committee on Water, Parks and Wildlife, has previously said the planned closings would be “devastating for park visitors throughout the state.”

State parks officials last week announced that $33 million in budget cuts passed by the Legislature in March would force the state to close 70 of California’s 278 parks, beaches and historic areas around the state as of July 2012. They said they would seek partnerships with local governments and nonprofits to keep some open, but they noted that the process to partner with a nonprofit to operate a park was complicated and in the past has required special legislation.

Without operating agreements, the state plans to close park sites across the state, from Pacific Coast beaches and redwood groves to Gold Rush-era mining sites in the Sierra Nevada and mansions in Sacramento.

Officials noted that the $99 million budget from the state’s general fund for parks in 2012-2013 is 40% less than the agency received in 2007-2008, and that about 500 of the 2,300 authorized parks jobs are vacant. About 200 more workers would be affected by the planned closings, but some could be transferred to vacant positions.

While the bill still must clear the Senate, the California State Parks Foundation is hopeful that it offers another avenue to keep parks open, said president Elizabeth Goldstein. The group is a sponsor of Huffman’s bill.

Operating agreements with nonprofits “would be an important short-term step to protect these parks,” she said.

“We’ve been hearing from organizations that are very interested” in partnerships with the state to run various parks, Goldstein said, and the foundation itself also will look at whether it makes sense to pursue an agreement with the state.

California State Parks director Ruth Coleman said last week that the state was eager to explore ways to preserve the parks slated for closure, but there would be a learning curve.

Several other bills that would encourage partnerships to operate state parks are pending in legislative committees or on the Assembly floor.

WooHoos for 2011!

We’re Not Tooting Our Own Horn

The first-ever Rendezvous attendees did it for us!

Here are some of the comments we received about the first Rendezvous held in Heber Springs in Arkansas:

  • “Great week of interacting; every session filled with interesting info; highly recommend it to other Workampers and Dreamers.”
  • “We have had a chance to meet and share our experiences with so many “new to” Workampers and who doesn’t want to talk about themselves? I felt I gained so many tips and information during these days.  Even after seven years it left me hungry for more! My creativity has also gotten a boost. I have so many new ideas for future projects. . . .  Great job to all of you!”
  • “Excellent….the facility was awesome; the program went like clockwork”
  • “I am retiring in the fall; Rendezvous provided best info to make decision to be a Workamper; talking to others with experience was great, answered all our questions and concerns.  This has been wonderful!  Hospitality was awesome and a great experience.”
  • “You all worked very hard in making this a very memorable experience!  This made us appreciate the whole Workamping organization more!”
  • “During my military career of 28 years, I attended some big conferences and schools and the presentation of this 1st Rendezvous has been on par with the BEST of those.  The attention to detail—individualized binders; quality of the graphics and powerpoint presentations; the facility and comfort and convenience it offered; the value of the seminars and information gathered from the very articulate presenters—the networking opportunities have been fantastic!  We have thoroughly enjoyed this experience.”
  • “Overall an excellent program; we are Lifetime Gold members and the “tools” we learned about are mind-boggling.”
  • “I am sad to see this over!”

Steve Anderson and the staff of Workamper News are seriously excited about the rest of this year! First, the success of the first-ever Rendezvous prompted Workamper News to quickly develop (as requested) another Workamper Rendezvous Event this year at the same venue!  When you have such a positive experience, why wait?  So many Workampers and Dreamers couldn’t make it in April—so now we are providing a second opportunity in 2011 to travel to the corporate home of Workamper News in lovely Heber Springs, Arkansas in October!  Everyone should be delighted that October 18-20th should be a season of   beautiful fall colors—not one of tornado warnings! . . . although one other comment heard from a camper was:    “Workampers thrive no matter the weather!”

As for my overall impression:  Workampers are very positive and very friendly and great to be around.  They made me so proud to be a Workamper!

My suggestion? Go to WORKAMPER RENDEZVOUS to find out how to get ideas, take action, live the dream!  All the details about the fall Rendezvous are there.  Be sure to find out about the experts’ Bonus sessions to take place on Friday, October 21, 2011, before making your final plans.

Train Yourself, Then Your Dog

by Mary Lou Merritt-Smith

A few weeks back, Steve mentioned an email he had received from a guest at a resort  (I’ll call him Mr. “C” for “complainer”).  Mr. C. wrote Workamper News to complain about a Workamper where he was vacationing, as if Workamper News, Inc. could or should be responsible for every Workamper in America’s actions or words.   (In fact, we don’t even know if the unnamed worker was one of our members!)  Mr. C. was upset because he was chastised for letting his dog go outside without a leash to do his business.  Mr. C, in his own defense, said that he couldn’t be expected to put a leash on his dog BEFORE he stepped down the steps of his RV,  in that he considered it dangerous because the dog could cause him to fall with the slightest tug.  Mr.C ‘s  habit was to put the leash on after he walked down the stairs and he didn’t appreciate the Workamper in her golf cart admonishing him because his dog peed at another camper’s site.

Although the Workamper’s attitude was the subject of Mr. C’s letter and he wasn’t seeking advice (just a whipping post), I began thinking about the dilemma Mr. C. and many of us face when negotiating the steps of our RV with our dog in the lead, often pulling and likely to cause us to trip “one of these days.”  I know my husband has complained about it regularly.    Was there a solution?

I decided to try to find a solution since our two very determined and strong dogs put us in this situation every day.  I am happy to report that I came up with a solution with surprising ease.   I leashed my dogs at the top of the steps, and using bribery (treats, of course), I taught my dogs to STAY at the top of the steps while I proceeded out the door and down the steps to the ground.  When I reached the ground, I turned around and gave the “OK” command. It has worked like a charm!  Seriously it only took a few days–and occasional reminders—to teach them this solution!  Now, both my husband and I feel more secure.  If the dogs are in the step-well ahead of me, I demand that they get back to the top of the steps and wait while I step forward and out the door safely to the bottom of the steps.

Of course I had to retrain my husband (a constant practice) to be consistent in training our pooches!  Now when we ask our dogs if they want to go out, they no longer race us to the door.  I still say “stay” just in case, before opening the door and proceeding down the outside steps.  Sometimes they try to follow before I turn around and face them; if so, I start all over.

Isn’t it amazing that with a little patience, we can train ourselves to be the ones in charge of our pets!  As for my husband, I still have to remind him that I’m the Alpha dog. That may take a lifetime.

There’s a moral to the story.   In life, we can benefit from someone’s negativity by finding a way to turn it into something positive.

Rather than passing blame or resenting criticism, look for solutions rather than fault.  No matter whose to blame, there are difficult circumstances in life we have to get past.  The choice is ours how we react.

As  for those of you with headstrong dogs–try this solution out!  Not only will you be safer, you’ll feel empowered!  Then give yourself a treat!

Three Ways to Help You Research Employers

Here are three ways to research an Employer to determine if you’d like to work there in the future.

1. EMPLOYER TOURS

Many of our WKN Employer members have created an Employer Tour to showcase their Workamping environment on location.  This is a great place to start you research.  You’ll appreciate seeing a photo gallery and information about their opportunity.  When logged in at Workamper.com, you can find this tool by clicking on the Workampers tab -> Find a Job -> Employer Tours.

For details on finding and using this tool, check out this Tutorial.

2.  PRAISE YOUR EMPLOYER

This tool can serve two purposes for you – a way for you to express a positive Workamping experience you had for the benefit of others,  AND a way for you to find out other Workampers’ opinions on an employer you are interested in.

To go to PRAISE YOUR EMPLOYER, login to Workamper.com and click on the Viewpoint tab -> Praise Your Employer.

Use the search boxes to find the employer. Double click on the red star posted to acquire the email address of the Workamper who posted that star. Then send that Workamper an email with questions you have in hopes they will reply.   You can also Double click on the employer name to be taken to the WKN Forums site where an automatic keyword search on that employer’s name will be done for you!

For details on finding and using this tool, check out this Tutorial.

(Note: PYE currently does not work with Internet Explorer version 9 or Safari. We are working on bug fixes!)

3. WORKAMPER EXPERIENCES FORUM

The Workamper Experiences forum is a section where Workampers can post about “great to not-so-great” Workamping experiences they’ve had. You can also use it to ask for info on an employer you’re interested in working for. The Experiences forum is part of the Members-Only forums so you will need to Register and create a username and password to be able to login to this site and access the Members-Only forums. Use the Search link at the top once you’re logged in to find what you’re looking for more quickly.

WKN Forums website (save this address as a bookmark or in your Favorites): http://forums.workamper.com

For details on finding and using this tool, check out this Tutorial.

(Note: The Forums website is a separate login from Workamper.com)

Launch of GPS made for RVers!

I promise I wasn’t aware of the launch of this GPS when I cautioned RVers about following GPS routing which didn’t take into consideration RVers limitations.  Rand McNally, however, just announced the release of TripMaker RVND 5510 – the first navigation device designed specifically for RVers.  Dave Muscatel, CEO of Rand McNally says:

“We’ve listened carefully to members of the RVing community, who told us overwhelmingly that they would be interested in purchasing a GPS if it provided RV-specific routing, stops and amenities that RVers need while on the road, and things to see and do along the way.  Our new TripMaker RVND line will solidly deliver on these expectations.”

The TripMaker RVND 5510  features:  RV Easy Routing along with legal (including propane and other RV only) height and weight restrictions, right or left turn preferences based on 11 different RV types, and a quick reference to the Rand McNally Road Atlas.  Turn-by-turn spoken and text directions keep the driver focused on the road ahead.  Additionally, it will feature more than 14 million points of interest, including festivals and national, state and regional parks; RV campgrounds and RV dealers and service, parking and rest areas, travel centers; detailed exit information and available amenities; RVer Tools such as checklists for set up and take down, maintenance logs and mileage calculators; pet-friendly locations and rec areas, as well as animal hospitals.

The RandMcNally “Best of the Road” program is also being featured this month in a promotion with USA Today.  Visit https://www.BestOfTheRoad.com for more information.

Did Someone Say “Discount?”

Everyone Loves a Deal!

That’s something you should remember when you set up your own small business.  You really, really should you know!  If you don’t know, but want to learn “why” or DO know and want to know HOW, then be sure to register HERE to attend a webinar given by Steve Anderson, WKN President, who will discuss “Why Every Workamper Should Own/Run a Small Business.”

The Webinar takes place:    May 18th from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. CDT

Steve will introduce you to his guest, Mark Kohler, author of “Lawyers are Liars” and “What Your CPA Isn’t Telling You?”  Ironically, Mark is both a Lawyer and a CPA.

Heads Up: Discounts for Camping in June!

The National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC) intends to attract  new camping customers and new business to the nation’s RV parks and campgrounds with its  June campaign, “Get Outdoors & Go Camping America…It’s Easy!” promotion set for June  1 – 25.

ARVC will be offering a 20% off coupon for all GoCampingAmerica.com/ARVC member parks. In addition, companies like Camping World, Coleman, El Monte RV, etc. are participating by offering discounts as well.   You will be able to download these coupons and encourage others to try out camping.

June is “Great Outdoors Month” and young families are encouraged to go camping– using GoCampingAmerica.com (GCA) coupons for discounts on all things camping– and to document their camping experience on video for a chance to win a grand prize, according to a news release.

The coupon states that it is only valid June 1 – June 25. It also states that it’s only accepted at participating parks and that the consumer must call the park at least 24 hours in advance to make a reservation. The guest may use the coupon for up to a seven-night stay during that time frame, but they can not use the coupon on an existing reservation.

You can access the web promotion page on GoCampingAmerica.com on or after May 15.

For more information on the campaign and for a peek at the 20% off GCA park stay coupon, click Here.

Here’s a Gift Idea!

You know, before you realize it, Father’s Day will be here.  If your father [or son/brother/uncle/nephew/friend] is intrigued with your dream or choice of lifestyle, maybe you can give them a taste of it!   See if their mouth waters too!  Buy a gift membership to Workamper News for them and open their eyes to the possibilities.  Click here to purchase and check off that task from your To-Do list!

A Gift Worth Repeating!

Speaking of Gifts, the First-Ever Workamper Rendezvous Was a Gift Worth Repeating! The staff at Workamper News feels like we’ve birthed a new baby.  We hear the second one is always easier.  SO, we are going to do it all over again!!!  That’s right:  ANNOUNCING, an encore performance of the first one, featuring the same seminar presenters and activities, is scheduled for October 18-20, 2011 with a Bonus Day on October 21st.

Fifty percent of the attendees at the first Workamper Rendezvous  were Dreamers who determined by the end of the Rendezvous that they believed even more in their dream of living the lifestyle.  Both experienced Workamper and Dreamer attendees declared their desire for a Reunion and that too is planned for April 2012.  The fall 2011 Workamper Rendezvous  is a chance for those who couldn’t make the April 2011 date to experience what almost 200 participants did.  That is, everything except the tornado watches, we assume.  October in the Ozark foothills should be a perfect time. We know we’ll give it our 110 percent!   Further information will be in the days ahead!
